The U.S. Embassy in Indonesia recently opened @america, the world’s first state-of-the-art high-tech American cultural center, at Pacific Place Mall located in downtown Jakarta. It was designed as a cutting-edge, 21st-century outreach venue where young Indonesians can experience and explore the United States and express their thoughts and ideas about America. In its first year, @america has drawn over 108,000 Indonesians, 83 percent of whom were 15–30 years old. It has hosted more than 600 programs, including webchats, discussions, cultural performances, debates, competitions and exhibitions, and also connects U.S. universities to Indonesian students through digital videoconferences and social media technologies.

A delegation of U.S. colleges and universities, along with the College Board, toured @america in March and interacted with groups of young Indonesians tapping into live video, Twitter feeds, art exhibits, Google Earth demonstrations and one-on-one impromptu dialogues. The embassy views @america as an opportunity to think creatively about public diplomacy programming. At the same time, it offers represetatives from U.S. institutions an avenue for contact with prospective applicants without having to leave their home campus. @america is committed to helping Indonesian students learn more about American higher education opportunities through education-themed programs and an in-house EducationUSA adviser.
