College Bound Seniors - 2011

SAT® participation increased in all six states in the Middle States Region, reflecting nationwide increases in the percentage of graduating students in the class of 2011 taking the SAT.

Data confirm that completing a core curriculum, enrolling in honors and AP® courses, and taking SAT Subject Tests™ in science and mathematics subjects not only enhance student performance on the SAT but also serve as valid predictors of college success. Students in the 2011 high school graduating class who reported completing a core curriculum received a combined SAT score that was, on average, 143 points higher than those who did not complete a core curriculum.

Maryland led the Middle States Region with the largest increase in its participation rate. Seventy-four percent of the state’s high school graduates participated in the college-going process by taking the SAT, up 2.5 percent since 2010.

Despite a smaller year-over- year increase, New York’s participation rate hit an all-time high at 89 percent, representing the nation’s third-highest state percentage of college-bound seniors who took the SAT. SAT participation in Delaware was also strong, with 74 percent of the state’s high school graduates taking the SAT, an 11 percent increase since 2007.

The diversity of SAT takers across the Middle States Region also significantly increased, reflecting the College Board’s continued commitment to expanding access and equity.

Graduating seniors who participated in the college-going process by taking the SAT in the states of Delaware, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania represented the most diverse groups of students in history. Thirty-nine percent of all New York SAT takers and 36 percent of all New Jersey SAT takers reported their parents’ highest level of education as a high school diploma or less.

Greetings! As the weather makes a turn for the better, your Middle States Regional Office Higher Ed educational managers are focusing their attention on ways to engage with our members. The months of May and June will be busy as the team continues to support your efforts to connect students to college success and opportunity.

Our educational managers will attend the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) regional conferences. These annual events serve as an opportune time to engage with our constituents across the Middle States Region. They provide avenues to develop, strengthen and support relationships with our members and to promote access and equity in education. Additionally, they afford us a chance to hear what is on our members’ minds, propose suggestions as new strategic postures are adopted and discuss common professional concerns. We look forward to seeing you at one of these regional conferences:

Dear Colleagues,

What an extraordinary time we had at the Middle States Regional Forum last month! Thanks to our Regional Council Chair Heather McDonnell of Sarah Lawrence College and our Chair-elect and Program Planning Chair Joel Lang of Salesianum School for a terrific conference. I’d also like to thank the more than 600 educators who attended the regional forum.

For me, student participation was the highlight of the conference. Our focus throughout the event was students in the region. Students were everywhere — meeting with keynote speaker Wes Moore, serving on a panel about AP® course participation with Peter Negroni, and talking to admission professionals and counselors about their college application experiences.

Dear Colleagues,

The Middle States Regional Office remains dedicated to supporting school districts and higher education institutions throughout the region as well as celebrating your successes, whether big or small. This month’s release of The 9th Annual AP® Report to the Nation and the complementary state supplements will provide valuable information about the current state of AP in our region, focusing on ensuring that more students are accessing rigorous, college-level course work while in high school. Congratulations to the 108 school districts from the Middle States Region who were recognized on the College Board’s 3rd Annual AP District Honor Roll [link to article in issue] for increasing participation and success simultaneously. I am also excited by the fact that 157 high schools in our region have qualified for funding to start new AP STEM courses through the AP STEM Access program [link to article in issue].

To celebrate and promote AP participation and success, Maryland’s 2013 AP Student Success Tour will take place on March 4, 2013. Initiated in February 2011 by then State Superintendent Nancy S. Grasmick and the College Board, the AP tour showcases rigorous instruction in middle schools (SpringBoard) and high schools (AP classes). This year, Lillian Lowery, the College Board and district leadership will tour schools on Maryland’s Eastern shore, specifically, Kent Island High School in Queen Anne’s County, Cambridge-South Dorchester High School in Cambridge, and Mardela High School in Wicomico.  AP students and teachers will have an opportunity to discuss their AP experience with Lowery.

The recent AP on Capitol Hill event led by Trevor Packer, senior vice president for Advanced Placement and College Readiness, included AP students and teachers who shared poignant stories about their AP experience. The purpose of the event was to bring a human face to the AP experience, raise awareness of the critical need to expand AP, and appeal to members of Congress to continue funding the AP Incentive Program (APIP), especially in support of AP Exam subsidies for low-income students. One of the student presenters, Julian Tisdale, a senior from Paul L. Dunbar High School in Baltimore, reflected on the summer accelerated programs and activities that he participated in as a Young Scholar in Baltimore City’s Project 3+3 program. Programs such as the Maryland Historical Society ‘s Center for Leadership, the Center for Law and Government at the University of Maryland School of Law, and the Maryland Leadership Workshop, a residential program at Washington College, gave Julian a new perspective that led to his enrollment in AP classes. For two summers, he participated in the AP Summer Prep Academy at Towson University, and also attended the AP Exam Review student conferences at Loyola and Towson universities, and the Young Scholars student conference at Goucher College. According to Julian, “Being on so many college campuses opened my eyes to college and inspired me and my peers to take AP classes. I could not have had the experiences without the support of the APIP grant, my teachers, family, counselor and friends.”

It is critical that we listen to Julian’s message and continue to provide more and more students the access to rigorous course work and higher education. Thank you for everything that you do to support the students in our care.
