Dear Colleagues,
April started with an exciting announcement: the first statewide partnership for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professional development in the nation!
On April 4, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the College Board issued dual press releases announcing a three-year partnership for STEM professional development for 1,500 teachers across the state. In the first year of the partnership, teachers will participate in five-day Summer Institutes in mathematics and science, with a focus on building a vertically aligned curriculum leading to AP® and college success for students. There will be 50 of these Summer Institutes scheduled in all the regions of New York state from June 25 through August 2012.

New York’s Copiague School District received the Advanced Placement® District of the Year honor last month for being the nation’s leader, among small school districts, in simultaneously expanding access to Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) courses and maintaining or improving AP Exam performance. Copiague’s students, teachers, district and school administrators, local public officials, and College Board staff celebrated the district’s achievements during a special ceremony.
“As we continue our efforts to expand access to AP while maintaining or improving performance, districts like Copiague offer a model of success that can be replicated all across the country,” said College Board President Gaston Caperton. “The College Board is proud to recognize the students, faculty and administrators of Copiague for their innovation, commitment and belief in themselves. Congratulations on a job well done.”

During the next few years, up to 1,500 New York public school teachers will receive Pre-AP® and AP® professional development training in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines throughout the state.
The $4.8 million AP STEM program, which will begin this summer and continue through 2014, will strengthen the teaching skills of both new and experienced middle school and high school STEM teachers from eligible schools. This increase in the number of teachers qualified to teach Pre-AP and AP STEM courses will enable schools and districts to prepare a larger number of students for college-level study and career trajectories in these content areas.
