Best-Selling Author Among Highlights at Regional Forum
Dec. 2011
Wes Moore, who wrote The Other Wes Moore, tells a story of key events in the lives of two men who shared a name and a neighbourhood, but thankfully not a fate. The author grew up in difficult circumstances after his father died young, but with the support of his family, he went on to become a decorated veteran and Rhodes Scholar.
As a young adult, he learned of another Wes Moore, who had lived not far from him and who also spent his childhood without a father. The other Wes Moore struggled and is now serving a life sentence in a Maryland prison for his role in a robbery and the killing of an off-duty police officer.
Through a series of letters and visits, one Wes Moore wrote the stories of both of them.
Moore, who now works as an advocate for children and education, will speak at the Middle States Regional Forum in Baltimore on Jan. 23 about his life story and the key events and people who helped shape it.
Joshua Parker, Maryland’s teacher of the year, also will speak at the regional forum, offering insight into his work as a middle school teacher and mentor.
In addition to inspiring speakers, this event offers workshops and sessions on timely topics for educators in all fields, including technology in the classroom, curriculum changes, financial aid assessment and more.
This year, the regional forum offers three-hour professional development sessions on Tuesday afternoon. Participants can choose from six sessions. With content designed for counselors, teachers and administrators, there’s something for everyone:
